Over the February half term The Morley Shed welcomed two groups of young people aged 10-14 yo from Farnley, Farsley, and Pudsey areas via the Leeds Youth Service. The groups loved being surrounded by the buzz of the workshop and learning how to use power tools to create something with purpose: bug hotels. The end products will also create a buzz of their own, with a whole host of hiding spaces and carbon-rich matter to live in.

The project was part of the Ernest cook trust’s and #iwill fund’s ‘Blue influencers’ scheme, where young people design a project to protect a local blue space under the guidance of their Blue Mentor: Groundwork Yorkshire’s Jack Hurrell. In this case, we are building on improvements to Farnley fishponds, where we will install some of the hotels and hope to boost invertebrate prospects.

“Our young people have absolutely loved making bug hotels as part of the Blue Influencers scheme. The Morley Shed Groundwork staff & volunteers have been brilliant! Learning about the environment and animals that live near blue spaces has given the young people a new appreciation for their local pond” Leeds Youth Service – Leeds City Council

A big thank you to Denise, Paul, Alli, Julie and the Shed volunteers for making this wonderful thing happen!
