About Us

Groundwork East is a community and environmental charity working across the East of England to change places and lives. We are proud to have been championing practical community action that benefits the natural world since 1985, running programmes to transform unloved green spaces, get people outside enjoying the natural world and supporting businesses to reduce their environmental impact. 

Celebrating 40 Years of Groundwork East – 2025

2025 marks a significant milestone for Groundwork East – 40 years working alongside communities across the East of England to to create a fair and green future in which people, places and nature thrive.

The Groundwork movement was born during a time of great challenge, as communities faced job losses due to industrial decline throughout the 1970s and 80s. Many of those same challenges persist today, but we remain committed to working hard for change on a local level.

Since 1985, our approach has always been rooted in close partnerships with communities, funders, and local stakeholders. Collaboration has been at the heart of our mission, and we continue to believe that we are stronger when we work together. We are proud to be part of a wider federation (link to Groundwork UK webpage) that shares our dedication to driving change and creating lasting impact.

At Groundwork East, we’ve always been a ‘doing’ organisation. There’s nothing we love more than rolling up our sleeves and getting our spades in the ground, working directly with communities to change places and lives.
