land management of a river

Our environmental specialists work with land owners, community groups and environmental partners to protect and enhance our green and blue spaces for people and nature.

Our services

Our natural environment team help public and private landowners increase the biodiversity of rural landscapes by:

  • Undertaking environmental impact surveys
  • Developing land management plans
  • Planting new woodland and managing existing
  • Undertaking ongoing habitat management including grasslands and wetlands
  • Complete invasive species surveys and management plans

As the host organisation for the Irwell Catchment Partnership, Groundwork supports partners to develop and deliver projects which improve water quality, reduce flood risk and manage water as an important natural resource.

Within the catchment partnership, Groundwork specialise in engaging with farmers and landowners to improve water quality and making sure local communities are always at the heart of the decision making process.

Our natural environment team also deliver physical works which protect and enhance river habitats. They remove invasive species, improve habitats, install leaky dams, clear overgrown river banks, construct paths and more!

And finally, our sustainable business consultants work with businesses who are at risk of polluting our waterways to deliver prevention campaigns, undertake audit and provide training to employees.

Examples of our work

Using drones to survey invasive species

Areas along river bank can be difficult to access, which is why we recently conducted a survey of invasive species along the Irwell Catchment by drone.

Supporting farmers to improve water quality

We supported farmers in the Irwell catchment to farm more sustainably, delivering initiatives which reduced run off and improved soil health.

Managing private land for biodiversity

land management - tree planting

Our landscaping team planted over 8,000 trees on private land and will be managing it for a 10 year period to ensure it becomes well established.
