Background

In early 2024 our Community Engagement team started speaking to residents in Edgeley, Stockport and Higher Folds, Leigh about climate change, how it effects them and how we can create more resilient neighbourhoods.

Speaking to the community about creating more resilient neighbourhoods

Evidence suggested that flooding was a major issue in Higher Folds and in Stockport, roads began to melt in the summer of 2022, as temperatures soared to nearly 40 degrees, suggesting the area was not well equipped for high temperatures.

Delivered as part of the international programme, Resilience 4 Communities our teams gained local insights which could then be used to help governments understand more about what communities know, think and believe about risks.

Engagement activities

We visited a number of existing community centres and events in the two neighbourhoods, utilising our existing networks and making new community contacts.

In addition we hosted a range of our own events, these included free activities for children, allowing parents and guardians time to share their thoughts and/or complete the survey.

Next steps

The research findings will be shared with the Resilient Cities Network team and the relevant local authorities. The intention of the research is to help mobilise funding to implement co-created solutions that help to create resilient neighbourhoods.

We hope to remain involved in the programme throughout it’s duration, building on our existing work and relationships.
