As a young and ambitious man, Lee was keen to learn new skills and find his career path. He participated in a range of courses and qualifications including the Prince’s Trust Team Programme, a gardening course and a Media course at college.

In 2020 his right to study expired and the process for renewal for refugees felt long and arduous. Not able to continue his studies or pursuit of work he spent time alone and noticed his mental health beginning to deteriorate.  Lee took steps to turn his life around and started to play football in the park and produce music to meet new friends and stay social.

Lee joined the Elevate Salford Project in August 2024 which included employment and skills support for refugees. Here he met Groundwork’s Employment Coach Kirsty. She spoke with Lee and was inspired by his positive energy. They discussed career options and agreed that construction could be a good option for Lee.

Kirsty helped Lee access some qualifications needed for this career including his H&S Level 1 in construction and his CSCS card. At first Lee was struggling in his mock tests but he was very dedicated to revision, with Kirsty encouraging him along the way. Despite a few setbacks with his exams Lee gained his new qualifications in early 2025.

Not long after, Lee received his right to work in the UK and armed with his new qualifications, Kirsty supported Lee to update his CV and from there apply for some work experience on a construction site.

Lee started a two-week work placement with SEDDON in February which he really enjoyed. The placement went so well that Lee was offered a 6-month paid contract with SEDDON which he is over the moon about.

Lee on a construction site after receiving employment and skills support

Kirsty and Lee remain in touch, with Kirsty on hand to offer any employment and skills support that Lee needs.

This Programme has opened and increased my thinking capacity as I have been studying keeping my brain working all the time, knowing new and safe ways to do things. Now I feel motivated and courageous enough to take on new tasks. Many thanks to Kirsty and everyone, I’m so happy.
