Keeping Waterways Clear To Reduce Flood Risk
Throughout 2021/22, Groundwork Greater Manchester’s Landscaping team have been undertaking proactive conveyancing work for the Environment Agency to water courses across the North West to reduce flood risk.
As part of the contract, the team have cut back and cleared overgrown grass, weeds, brambles and other blockages along 20 brooks and rivers including Whittle, Wistaston, Spittle and Prenton Brooks.

Leaving the items in situ results in an increased flood risk, as water cannot pass freely in times of heavy rainfall, putting an increased number of homes at risk.
Richard Gee, Contract Manager at Groundwork Greater Manchester added,
“We have been working with the Environment Agency for several years helping to enhance the river environment for people to enjoy, as well as safeguarding the local communities from flooding. It’s an extremely rewarding project to be part of.”
