Fred* was struggling with various aspects of his life due to PTSD – which he developed whilst serving in the Armed Forces. He had financial difficulties and was experiencing anxiety, struggling especially when he was in large crowds and when travelling alone on public transport.

When Fred first met Groundwork’s Veterans Project Co-ordinator, Chris, he broke down and said that he didn’t know where to turn for help and support and realised he had become isolated and depressed.

Chris suggested that he enrolled on the Salford Learning, Skills & Work programme and together they could develop a plan which would tackle the different challenges he was facing.

In his first 1-2-1 coaching session, Fred agreed that his immediate priority was to work on his financial difficulties. Chris helped Fred to source a lump sum so he could clear his debts and set up Personal Independence Payments (PIP). As a result, Fred said ‘it was like a weight has been lifted’ and shared with Chris that his mental health already felt better.

After his finances were under control, Chris supported Fred with some ideas how to tackle his anxiety and social isolation. Fred started to volunteer with the Salford Foundation, working on their garden and with Salford Loaves & Fishes.

Fred now feels more positive about the future and has the confidence to meet new people and less anxious about using public transport.
