“I’m grateful for someone helping me with my mock exams” – Eskinder’s Story

Background
Groundwork Greater Manchester is working with Salford CVS and Salford City Council on the Elevate Salford – Learning, Skills & Work programme, funded by the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation. Elevate Salford supports individuals furthest from the job market by providing access to relevant training alongside coaching and mentoring which supports their personal development. The programme helps participants overcome barriers, build confidence, and connect with opportunities to secure employment or progress toward their goals.
Starting a career in construction as a refugee
Eskinder moved to the UK from Eritrea eight months ago in search of a better future with his family. Despite gaining refugee status with the right to work, he faced several challenges, one being his living conditions and the other his ability to work in the construction sector, where he needed to obtain a Health & Safety qualification and a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card to work in the sector.
In October 2024, Eskinder joined the Elevate Salford programme and began working with Kirsty, one of Groundwork’s Employment & Wellbeing Coaches, to develop his Health & Safety skills. His goal was to achieve a Level 1 qualification, obtain his CSCS card, and improve his employability through CV building and job search support. However, as English is not Eskinder’s first language, he initially struggled with the technical aspects of the Health & Safety course.
To support Eskinder’s learning, Kirsty provided intensive guidance and sourced translated revision materials to aid his retention of key information. He was also given a learner laptop to practice mock exams and revise consistently. Over the next eight weeks, Eskinder dedicated himself to daily revision, working through all 700 potential test questions. With sustained effort, he consistently scored 557/600 in practice exams, demonstrating his progress and readiness for the real assessment.
By January 2025, Eskinder’s mock test scores had improved significantly, allowing him to sit for the official exam. His dedication paid off – he passed and successfully obtained his CSCS green card. Overjoyed with his achievement, Eskinder is now working closely with Kirsty to secure employment in the construction sector.
As the programme works closely in partnership with five other VCSE organisations, Kirsty has been able to connect Eskinder with the Mustard Tree, who has referred him for a placement with construction company, Seddon. This opportunity will allow him to gain valuable work experience and take another step toward securing a stable career.
Eskinder commented
I am very grateful for getting my CSCS Card with Groundwork and the patience they have shown me while practising my mock exams.
