Declan was referred to Groundwork by the Care Leavers’ Team at Stockport Council. He had recently moved into a shared flat and was embarking on his first year of college.

When Vanessa first met Declan in June 2024 at a café in Stockport, he felt like things weren’t going too well. Declan is neurodiverse and, as a result, struggled to concentrate in class for more than 10 minutes. He often became overwhelmed and needed to leave the room abruptly to manage his emotions. On top of this, he was being bullied by his peers and felt quite isolated.

As Vanessa had undergone neurodiversity training, she reassured Declan during their meetings that it was okay for him to leave the sessions whenever he felt overwhelmed. This provided him with great comfort, and they began to develop a strong relationship. Through regular coaching sessions, Vanessa was able to support Declan in navigating some of his challenges.

As a result, Declan has built resilience and self-esteem, feels much more confident in himself, and has successfully applied several coping mechanisms recommended by Vanessa, which have enabled him to thrive at college.

Declan has now achieved three accredited qualifications and is currently studying for his fourth. He is also in the process of securing a supported apprenticeship role, where he hopes to start his career in an office.
