Background

Turning Point is a social enterprise providing a range of Health and Social care support to people who are struggling with addiction, mental health issues, learning difficulties and more. In partnership with Turning Point, Groundwork Greater Manchester’s IPS employment specialists are working with people who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction by finding them meaningful employment which will aid their recovery journey.

Struggling with unemployment

Damian was a self-employed restaurant owner who, like many businesses, struggled to keep his business running during the COVID 19 pandemic and was forced to close. Unable to find work in a struggling sector, Damian became unemployed and shortly after, he became homeless and was left to rely on friends and family to ‘sofa surf’ in order to stay off the streets. As a result of such tragedies, Damian feel in to substance dependence, mainly heroin and cocaine.

From here it wasn’t long until Damian noticed that his relationships were breaking down and his health was deteriorating. He knew that he needed to change his lifestyle.

A new beginning

Damian reached out to Turning Point for support in October 2023. As well as being provided with a dedicated Recovery Worker, Turning Point suggested that Damian should immediately start working with Groundwork’s IPS programme for employment support.

Damian had low self-esteem and confidence at this time and felt that returning to his preferred employment sector was out of reach. However Tyron, Groundwork Employment Specialist, explained to Damian how employment would help provide him with structure and a sense of achievement as he progressed through his recovery journey.

They quickly got to work with an intense job search process, resulting in a quick shift in motivation and circumstances for Damian.

The perfect match

Finding the right employer for Damian was essential. Tyron needed the employer to be flexible with work hours and supportive of regular check in’s with Tyron and Damian.

Damian was able to secure a new job with Agento Restaurant as a Waiter and after a quick visit to Matalan where Tyron bought him some new, smart attire for his new role, he started later that afternoon.

Tyron regularly check’s in with Damian and his employer whilst in work. Several months later he remains happy and stable in his new job.
