“I developed the skills I need to get a job in the environmental sector” – Callum’s Story
Finding Work
Despite having lots of experience volunteering, 23-year-old Callum from Whitefield was struggling to secure a permanent job.
In September 2021 Callum joined the Low Carbon Careers course in Rochdale, which focused on developing a career in the Natural Environment.
His Experience
During the 3-week course Callum learnt general workplace skills such as health and safety training and safeguarding, and built on his volunteering skills learning new green skills such as nature-based solutions.
In addition, Groundwork Employment Coach & Tutor, Liz Simon spent 1-2-1 time with Callum building his confidence around job interviews. By undertaking mock interviews Callum was able to build his confidence in this area ready for an interview as an Urban Ranger with Groundwork’s Fencing & Landscaping team.

Head of Contracts Richard Gee commented “Callum clearly knows his stuff and was able to get this across in the interview, which is testament to how far he has progressed”, Callum will be starting his new role as Urban Range on the 10th January.
He added:
“The course with Liz was very enjoyable. It helped me with my confidence and to develop the skills I need to get a job in the environmental sector.”
