“My mental health was deteriorating” – Angela’s Story

59-year-old Angela from Tameside worked in various roles in the NHS for more than 10 years before she took a break to care for her elderly father.
Her caring responsibilities lasted almost 8 years until her father passed away a few years ago. At this point Angela’s mental health began to deteriorate, struggling with the loss of her father and other challenges in her life.
In late 2024 Angela’s GP suggested that getting back to work would provide focus for her and help relieve her depression. Angela agreed and immediately began volunteering at a local hospice, putting her care skills to use.
Angela’s GP referred her to Groundwork’s Employment Support programme, which takes a personalised approach helping people get back into work. Angela met Gulshan in December at the Tameside One Library determined to find employment.
Since this initial meeting Gulshan and Angela have met at the library most weeks, spending time updating Angela’s CV, applying for roles and build her confidence up ready for interviews. With this employment support, Angela feels ready to take on a new job.
