Duration: May 2026

Background

The Northern Flower House is a Northern project for the National Wildflower Centre. The project aims to introduce biodiversity and colour into the lives of communities across the North by growing wildflower meadows in local parks. The wildflower seeds sown into these new habitats can be harvested and used to create more meadows across the City, promoting a circular economy whilst contributing to a biodiverse and healthier city region.

What we’re doing

In 2023, the first wildflower meadow has been created in Fog Lane Park, Burnage with the help of Friends of Fog Lane Park and the local community. We will be sowing a mix of annuals for the first year, and a mixture of perennials like Meadow Buttercup, Red Campion, Meadow Sweet, Wild Carrot and Purple Loosestrife.

Groundwork will be rolling out a training programme for community groups and partners involved, where they will learn about how to create, establish and harvest a wildflower meadow. The wildflower seed harvested by volunteers will then be used to plant more meadows in parks and greenspaces across Manchester, eventually creating a network of seed production hubs.

We will be:

  • Consulting with the community about where the meadows will be planted and in which parks
  • Supporting community activities and events
  • Developing and rolling out a wildflower training module covering wildflower creation, establishment and harvesting
