Duration: April 2025

Background

In the UK, mental health problems are among the main reasons for sickness absence (Office for National Statistics, 2021b) and the social and economic cost of mental health in England has grown in the last decade to £119 billion a year (Centre for Mental Health, 2020b).

Green Social Prescribing is the practice of supporting people in engaging in nature-based interventions and activities to improve their mental and physical health.

Groundwork have been an active partner in the Nature for Health partnership and an advocate for Green Social Prescribing for many years.

What we’re doing

In collaboration with Pennine Care’s Early Intervention Teams, we will support residents in Brinnington and the surrounding area who have severe mental health issues, onto our Green Social Prescribing programme.

Our experienced team will invite patients to participate in a 12-week programme at Green Thumbs allotment where they will take part in a range of therapeutic horticultural activities, including food cultivation, garden care, tree planting, and bushcraft.
