Duration: Until August 2023

Background

Invasive species, such as Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed, destroy our natural ecosystems by taking over the areas surrounding our waterways.

To combat this, we want to engage local residents in the things they can do to prevent these species from spreading, from reporting them to pulling them out themselves.

What we’re doing

Working closely with Bolton Green Umbrella and the Bradshaw Fly Fishers, we will be recruiting both community groups and individual volunteers in Bolton.

Over a 10 week programme, we will be educating them on the conservation of native species, and teaching them to pull up Himalayan Balsam along the Jumbles Reservoir.

Small pots of funding for community groups is available to access, to enable them to get involved in Balsam Bashing. This could include funding for equipment e.g. gloves, or other expenses that enable you to get involved e.g. travel.

We will also provide these tools for any individuals wanting to take part.

We currently have sessions from 10am on the following days:

  • Wednesday 12th July
  • Wednesday 19th July
  • Wednesday 26th July

We will be meeting at Bradshaw Cricket Club Car Park, Rigby Lane, Bolton BL2 3EU

Volunteer for as long or little as you like!
