Get Outdoors, Get Active
Groundwork’s horticultural therapy programmes encourage adults and young adults to learn and enjoy gardening and food growing techniques to improve their physical & mental health and well-being.
What do sessions include?
The projects can be tailored to the needs of local people. This can be those with mental health problems – including stress – learning difficulties, physical disabilities, older people, or university students.
The sessions are personalised to residents needs and goals and can focus on reducing stress, learning new skills, improving well-being, and improving physical activity.
Impact
As part of the project participants are encouraged to monitor improvements to their health and well-being by complete ting surveys at the beginning and end of the project, and in some cases by monitoring their step count.
The courses often run in local community spaces, with participants undertaking tasks to improve those spaces.

“Thank you for everything you did to make this such a successful course. It was also helpful that you were flexible with new people joining midway which allowed for the often chaotic life patterns that many of our service users have. The sessions were an effective mix of physical outdoor tasks with indoor, interesting and informative activities and I feel was pitched at the right level to encourage service users who are not normally open to outdoor activities to try them, whether that is down to health issues or low confidence.”
