Marilyn standing outside @TheGrange community centre which helped her take small steps to big changes

At a time when many of us are finding life challenging, one woman in Blackpool serves as an inspiring example to never give up. By taking small steps, Marilyn was able to make big changes to her life.

In 2022, Marilyn was already living with a disability that affected her daily life, when she was involved a car accident. This had a big impact on both her physical and mental wellbeing and she even had to stop helping out as a volunteer, which was something she really loved.

Tiny Steps to Big Changes

After being isolated at home for nearly 18 months, Marilyn decided something had to change. She began her recovery with small, courageous steps. First, she just walked to her front door. Then, after a few days, she walked to the house next door! She felt happy when she did these small things, so she then set her sights on walking to @TheGrange community centre, which is three quarters of a mile away. It took her many months and lots of little rests, but finally she did it! Just sitting enjoying a coffee in the community café and chatting to people made her feel like she belonged. Gradually she didn’t lonely anymore!

Gardening and New Friends

Fast forward to 2025 and Marilyn is now thriving – and says it is all thanks to the support and opportunities provided by @TheGrange. Marilyn says: “It all started when I took part in a gardening course. I really enjoyed being out in nature with like-minded people and I ended up volunteering with Grow Blackpool. Since then, I’ve joined the library and gone on some of the organised day trips. There are lots of people struggling financially at the moment, so the advice and support I’ve had from Groundwork’s Green Doctors to help save money on my energy bills has been a big help.”

Helping Her Community

Recognising Marilyn’s passion for helping others, the @TheGrange team invited her to join the Friends of Grange Park Group. She has since become a valued member, using her voice to represent her local community and champion the needs of other people. Marilyn has had a huge impact on strengthening the support network within the Grange Park area, where she was born and continues to live.

Stronger Body, Happier Mind

One of Marilyn’s personal goals was to improve her physical stamina. Last year, she joined the @TheGrange walking group. To begin with she needed to make several stops along the route to rest and catch her breath. But today, she can easily complete the walk without stopping. This remarkable achievement has not only improved her physical health but also had a massive impact on her mental wellbeing. The walking group also includes meditation, and Marilyn says this brings her calmness and clarity and has significantly improved her breathing. She says “There are so many wonderful sights and sounds to enjoy in nature – I love it and it helps me to focus on other things rather than feeling in constant pain.”

Lots of Help from @TheGrange

The community centre has also provided Marilyn with essential support in a number of other ways. This has ranged from helping her access to food appliances, to benefiting from a free freezer meal programme. Through friendship, guidance and taking part in wellbeing activities, @TheGrange has been able to support Marilyn in transforming her life.

Marilyn’s New Life

Marilyn’s story shows us how important it is to have welcoming and supportive places in our community that open to all. Her determination, coupled with the opportunities provided by @theGrange has enabled her to regain confidence and independence. It has also given her a renewed sense of purpose.

Marilyn says; “At The Grange has become my lifeline. I’d describe it as being like a big box of chocolates with different sections. You can dip into whatever you like, whenever you like. You never feel pressured into doing anything –  I come here because I enjoy it and it makes me feel better.”

“I feel like I am finally getting back to where I was. @TheGrange has been a great help and I tell everyone I meet that they should get down here and make use of the brilliant services and facilities.”

What we can all learn from Marilyn’s example:
  • Never give up! Even small steps can lead to big changes.
  • Being part of a community is important. Friends and helpful places can make a big difference.
  • Helping others feels good. Marilyn’s kindness has made her and her local community stronger.

@TheGrange has been a great help and I tell everyone I meet that they should get down here and make use of the brilliant services and facilities.
