Karl Salutes Programme That Helped Him Pursue Army Aspirations
A young man from Wigan says that the King’s Trust Team Programme provided him with the perfect confidence boost before he starts new career.
Karl (20) from Wigan was at a crossroads. After leaving college, he struggled to find his path, facing unemployment and occasional casual work. With his sights set on joining the Army, a process that could take a year, he needed something to keep him active and motivated.
His Work Coach suggested the Kings Trust Team Programme, delivered by Groundwork. Initially hesitant, Karl quickly realised it was the push he needed.

“I’m so glad I joined,” he says. “The programme not only boosted my confidence but also equipped me with valuable skills. I’m much more comfortable interacting with people now, which will be crucial in the Army.”

Course highlights
A highlight for Karl was contributing to local community projects. “Working on a football ground and a nature reserve helped me develop practical skills and realize the power of teamwork,” he explains. “I used to be quite independent, but the programme showed me how much more you can achieve together.”
A residential trip further strengthened the team bond, mirroring the experiences he’ll encounter during Army training. “I made lasting friendships,” Karl says. “The course has been a massive help to me and I’ve seen first hand the effect it has had on others in the group too.”
Karl is set to join up with his new Army colleagues shortly. When asked what advice he would give to other young people in a similar position to him he said: “Don’t hesitate. If you want to change your life, just do it. Don’t wait.”
