Adorn CIC makes and sell a range of ethical handmade costume / fashion jewellery, and delivers jewellery upcycling workshops, as well as offering services and resources for personal, professional and community development.

Adorn received EDP funding and support to:

  • Develop their workshop offer for individuals and small private groups online and in person
  • Buy materials for a jewellery range that customers can return and exchange
  • Offer online training
  • Set up a time banking platform to incentivise volunteering and mediate their capacity building work.

EDP also covered the cost of staff time to undertake these projects and implement these trading ideas, as well as giving access to specialist consultants.

Adorn’s 1-1 and small group workshops have attracted custom and their time banking platform is now live. They will be launching our new jewellery range leading up to Valentine’s day and online training in the near future.  The EDP enabled Adorn to access the time, support and resources needed to develop a detailed business plan, improve financial management and trade more effectively.

As a social enterprise, Adorn want to encourage more people to upcycle broken and unwanted costume jewellery instead of discarding it, and allowing materials to go to waste, ending up in landfills or being incinerated.

Prior to this project, they only offered workshops to community groups and organisations, whereas now they’re directly available to the general public and are more appropriate for those who prefer or need personalised 1-1 interactions. With the new jewellery range, Adorn can tap into consumers who are not particularly interested in environmental sustainability, as well as establish an internal supply chain instead of relying solely on donations.

As time banking is about valuing people for their contribution as opposed to their income or social status, we can now use this as a way to give people access to the specialised knowledge and support Adorn can offer, in return for their time spent helping us and other people. Ultimately, we want to introduce people to (re)newed ideas and practices/habits, which takes concentrated effort. For the first time, we could afford to pay staff to do this work.

Adorn intend to grow their time bank and utilise this as a way to ensure that their environmental and social offer is relevant and appealing to their target audiences.
