“Normally I’m stuck in the house. It gave me something to do” – Mag’s Story
Mags is a volunteer with the Polperro Potters at the Polperro Walk Community Garden. Being local to Hattersley, Mags was encouraged to join by Tracy, another local resident, as a way to help her to improve her confidence and spend more time outdoors.
The Polperro Potters were creating a shelter using pallets. The group then decided to use a hedge/fence (also known as a ‘fedge) to separate the shelter from the path to the woods.

A willow fedge pack was purchased with funding from Onward Homes. Suzanne and Gemma from Groundwork helped the group to erect the fedge.
Mags was apprehensive about joining in as she is unable to kneel or bend. A vital part of the process is to trim the end off all the stems of willow, and this is a job that can be done seated. Mags agreed to carry out this task, sitting close to the others that used the stems as she processed them.

Mags’ confidence grew and she took part in tying the stems together to secure them in place.
The fedge creating was a group effort and Mags’ input was invaluable to the team and the activity.
Normally I’m stuck in the house. It gave me something to do, it was different to things I normally do. I enjoyed the day, I’m looking forward to doing more projects with Groundwork.
